What is it about?

The Association of Tribal Archives, Libraries and Museums (ATALM) 7th annual conference exchanged best practices for indigenous archives, libraries, and museums. The city Palm Springs, California played host to an ‘eventful’ ATALM 2014 international conference featured diverse range of activities namely, poem reading from personal collection, melodious flute by native players, open house and cultural evening at a tribal museum etc. The conference brought together 520 registered delegates(as mentioned in conference brochure)from United States, Canada and Mexico. The ATALM conferences are the important conference due to the participation of large number of tribal libraries and cultural heritage keeping organizations serving indigenous population. As a Fulbright scholar the author is interested to know about American tribal history, indigenous culture, native archives and libraries, also excited to see the country’s desert scenery. Additionally, ATALM scholarship support encouraged the author to attend the conference, and finally the heat of the desert which accentuated the beauty of Palm Springs makes a complete experience.

Why is it important?

The sessions at ATALM differ greatly from other academic or professional conferences in terms of topic and focus area; rather than listen to and concentrate on continuous presentations I preferred to attend selected workshops with an opportunity to strengthen skills so that the lesson learned can be put into practice.

Perspectives

"For me it was once in a life time conference. I stayed four nights (8-11, June) at Renaissance hotel in Palm Springs conveniently located and connected to the conference venue- the Palm Springs Convention Center. As a first-timer, shy and new person I found myself isolated and out of place but I managed to adjust myself since we all have the common professional goals. The desert mountains, tree-lined canyons and hot springs are famous in Palm Springs….I liked the swaying palm trees and mountains which is naturally resplendent”.
