What is it about?
Huffman coding, as an algorithm derives its power from a bottom-up approach, rather than top-down. As such, it illustrates how nature and human minds work in ways that are often ignored by deliberate, analytical thought.

Why is it important?
A fundamental principle of computer science has broad implications for problem solving in all fields, including how we, as human beings, see the world.
Perspectives
As a student and graduate student at UCSC, I was uniquely privileged to study under two great minds of the Twentieth Century: David Huffman, a pioneer in Information Theory, and Gregory Bateson, one of the founders of Cybernetics and Systems Theory. Merging their philosophies has deeply affected my perspective on life. This paper is my first attempt to articulate that synthesis.
