This paper examines the use of personal development plans (pdp) in terms of identifying workplace goals and highlights the role of line managers in supporting the achievement of these goals.

Why is it important?
Appetite for annual performance appraisals is diminishing but what replaces them? The use of a structured aid memoir such as a PDP can help increase regular feedback, structure a conversation and work towards achieving set goals. This paper highlights the key role played by line managers in the support stage but concludes that they also need support and training to be effective in this role.
