What is it about?

The study investigated factors influencing KS among Information and Communication Technology Artisans in Ibadan, Nigeria by adopting the Social Exchange and Social Capital theories. Survey research design was adopted. Convenience and snowball sampling techniques were used to select the respondents. A total of 285 copies of questionnaires were distributed of which 214 copies considered useful for data analysis, giving a response rate of 75.09%. The results show that gender of the artisans, perceived benefits, social identification, shared language and goals have positive significant relationship with KS except social identification where the relationship is negative.

Why is it important?

The study confirms the role of social exchange and social capital theories in interpreting individual’s behaviour in KS and provides useful insights on how to implement good KS practices among the artisans. The study also provides an exposition into the social environment of the artisans with regards to KS and how the artisans can maximise the social factors to share knowledge.

Perspectives

This study is one of the first pieces of empirical research on knowledge sharing among quasi professional in Nigeria that used social exchange and social capital theories.
