What is it about?

Risk is a word we use in our everyday lives. More often we use risk to refer to real danger however risk can also be considered as uncertainty about a future event. This paper shares what teachers said about perceived risk and uncertainty surrounding their new learning and expectations to change their practice. Teachers responded to uncertainty surrounding the organisation and purpose of their learning, relationships and the new knowledge as well as how they may or may not be judged. They spoke of feeling vulnerable when the level of uncertainty and risk was high. These teachers responded in different ways to those who experienced little or no uncertainty.

Why is it important?

Learning is all about risk-taking and uncertainty even for adults. The level of uncertainty does matter when we require others to learn and change their practice. However, not all sources of uncertainty are necessary – many can be reduced by careful consideration and forethought by those in charge of the learning environment. Talking about risk, uncertainty, mistakes and emotion while learning can raise our awareness and ultimately improve learning.

Perspectives

This work has altered how I consider change. I often wondered why some adults show visible emotion when they encounter new learning associated with change. Instead of immediately thinking of this as resistance, I now view this mostly negative emotion as a reflection of the uncertainty the person is experiencing. For the most part, this is something I can reduce. By thinking and talking about the uncertainty in the situation, I can support learners to feel less risk and vulnerability as they learn and change.
