What is it about?

Government reforms and financial austerity are exerting multiple pressures on public universities globally. A financial sustainability agenda within public universities will conflict directly with their main academic mission. However, universities may still respond by attempting to take up this financial sustainability logic for survival and to attain legitimacy. We look at the experience of five largest public universities in Malaysia in implementing a financial sustainability agenda and how these universities managed the conflicting logics through loose coupling and compartmentalisation to enable the dual logics to co-exist.
