What is it about?

Robotic technologies, like surgical robots, have the potential to transform healthcare by improving efficiency and patient care. However, their adoption often faces challenges, such as high costs, technical complexity, and resistance from healthcare professionals. This study reviews the use of change management practices to overcome these barriers. By analysing 44 studies, we identify key strategies, such as involving stakeholders, providing training, and aligning new technologies with organisational goals. We also propose a new framework to help healthcare organisations adopt robotic technologies more effectively. Our findings aim to make the transition to robotic healthcare smoother and more successful for everyone involved.

Why is it important?

Robotic technology is often introduced into healthcare with high expectations of efficiency and improved care. However, many projects struggle because staff are not prepared, organisational cultures are overlooked, and change processes are poorly managed. This research is important because it identifies these recurring challenges and proposes a framework that helps leaders, policymakers, and practitioners manage the human and organisational side of robotics adoption.

Perspectives

The goal is for healthcare organisations to apply the framework when introducing robotic systems, ensuring that staff engagement, training, adaptability, and co-creation are prioritised. Policymakers and regulators may also use these insights to create supportive environments for technology adoption. Ultimately, the aim is to reduce resistance, lower hidden costs, and enable robotics to improve healthcare delivery sustainably.
