Why is it important?

The current workforce, often termed “multi-generational” is highly influenced by the Millennials (i.e., the generation of children born between 1976 and 1994). Their connectivity to online environment impacts organizational processes such as internal communications and employee social well-being. As social well-being is becoming an increasingly important element of employee engagement, it is worth examining how organizations can influence employee engagement though online social networking technologies.

Perspectives

The paper indicate that employee engagement is positively associated with the time leaders spend on internal online networking platforms, the code of online networking conduct, and the presence of an open organizational culture. I believe that time leaders spend online is crucial at the adoption stage of the internal platforms, because employees can experience a new method of interaction with their supervisors (if open culture and code of conduct are ensured). However, when online platform becomes a regular communication tool in organization, time leaders spend online will not suffice. Leaders might need various skills related to online interaction, inspiration, and influence.
