What is it about?

Peer support workers (PSWs) help people with mental health challenges by sharing their own experiences and offering support. This study looked at role-play exercises used in training PSWs to understand what they talk about and how they communicate. We found that PSWs focused on users’ challenges, recovery, and building a supportive relationship. They used a friendly, collaborative style, sharing personal stories to encourage hope and empowerment. Unlike traditional mental health roles, PSWs emphasised lived experience. These findings suggest PSWs can play a unique role in helping people recover and feel more connected to their communities.
