Why is it important?
The competency literature has emphasized leadership performance on efficiency and effectiveness criteria at the expense of ethical leadership. This article highlights this deficiency and describes one such competency - the service of followers - which focuses on the relational and ethical dimensions of leadership
Perspectives
I believe that leaders are appointed as stewards of the organization and its resources, and not to advance their personal interests. If this is the case, then leaders should be selected and developed on the basis of a set of competencies that reflect this and simultaneously advance the interests of society and the environment and not simply the short term interests of shareholders. Perhaps the place to start is with the service of their followers.
