What is it about?
Economic sanctions are increasingly prevalent in geopolitics, predominantly implemented through unilateral actions. These measures often challenge the existing international law framework, as they do not completely align with established legal categories, thus frequently eluding clear definition and evaluation. Consequently, this article begins by delineating the current landscape and un-derscores the inherent shortcomings. On that basis, it delves into the principal justifications for unilateral sanctions, seeks to identify common legal ground, and highlights the inconsistencies. The last part concludes and advocates for reform.
