What is it about?
The current standard of agricultural market access appear to be inefficient. The flexibility of the latter has contributed to exacerbating the inequalities between the richest and poorest members. This is probably why many developing countries are appealing for a comprehensive overhaul of existing provisions. The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate by text and empirical facts, the need to reform the rules in force. Such a reform has already found its essence in the draft modalities under negotiation

Why is it important?
This study is important because it uses an innovative approach.Indeed, it is one of the few legal studies that focuses solely on market access for agricultural products, while making the link with the other pillars of the Agreement on Agriculture. Finally, the paper not only examines the impact of existing standards on the market access capacities of the poorest countries, but also looks at the inherent limits to the international trade integration of these countries.
Perspectives
While showing the effect of current standards on market access for the poorest countries, this paper explores the potential for WTO members to move forward and make agricultural trade a win-win process. This could pave the way for fairer agricultural trade as mentioned in the preamble of the WTO Agreement on Agriculture.
