What is it about?

In an individual company, its Intellectual Capital (IC) can be created or destroyed over a period of time. The same can be said if we analyse the IC of a whole network. Through a case study, this paper shows that in a network with specific characteristics (a seaport), actions conducted by its members affect positivelly or negativelly the IC of the seaport and vice versa, i.e. actions made by the network coordinator have positive or negative impacts in the individual members' IC. We also show that IC changes over time,

Why is it important?

We found that in a network (a seaport), the IC of the network as a whole is interconnected with the IC of its members. Futhermore, it changes over time as a consequence of different actions. This is ariculated in a framework, where collective and individual IC dimensions are depicted. Therefore, being aware of such relationship is crucial for managers (of both network and the individual companies), which are concerned with its organizations' performance.

Perspectives

We hope that this article creates awareness regarding the implications and complexities of managing the IC of a whole network , in this case a seaport. This is a neglected theme in IC literature, but one with important social implications. Networks can be important nodes for regional development.
