What is it about?
This study looks at how workplace incivility affects nurses' intentions to leave their jobs or the nursing profession. We also explore how two factors—organizational efficacy (how effective nurses believe their workplace is) and calling (a nurse's sense of purpose in their job)—can impact this relationship. We surveyed 187 nurses in the Southwest US and found that incivility influences their desire to leave their jobs but not necessarily their profession. Organizational efficacy and a strong sense of purpose can help reduce the negative effects of incivility. These findings suggest that healthcare organizations should create a positive work environment and encourage a sense of purpose among nurses to retain staff. This research is unique in examining the specific effects of different sources of incivility and introducing new ways to understand how it influences nurses’ decisions to stay or leave.
