New routines in complex settings such as psychiatric hospitals are challenging to implement. We look into how a new payment reform in psychiatry affects doctors' and nurses' work in day to day care. Our findings suggest that in contexts with more complex patient needs, the new requirements meet stronger barriers. One crucial success factor was that the underlying principles behind such innovations have to be explained to people, rather than just telling them what they have to change.
