What is it about?

Based on the principles of sharing immediate, unalterable, transparent and secure information, many developers are creating solutions for supply chains (SC), giving rise to the Blockchain technology in the supply chain (Bc-Sc) platforms, the goal of which is to provide solutions in this area. Thus, the purpose of this study was to analyse the available universe of platforms in SC, and through them to establish an understanding of the solutions and applications that are being built and proposed to the market. The research maps and synthesizes concepts and applications of the platforms for SC. The platforms involved with the development of solutions with blockchain technology are relatively representative (138 found by this research, and 47 offer solutions in SC), as well as the diversity of solutions and application (101 applications), covering different activities and areas of the SC. This research can offer managers and scholars of the subject a broad view of the solutions proposed in Bc-Sc. Through this study, it is possible to establish a comparison of the existing possibilities for an organization, for example: classify the solutions proposed by the platforms; understand their application in different activities; and classify them in SC.

Why is it important?

This is one of the first papers in a leading international OSCM (operations and supply chain management) journal to analyze the Bc platforms in SC and thereby has its relevance by synthesizing the knowledge that is dispersed in software developers (platforms).

Perspectives

The narrative and the different examples provided contribute to managers’understanding of the different possibilities for Bc-SC. Studying the services offered by the various platforms also enables managers to better understand what options exist and could potentially be utilized.
