What is it about?

The paper deals with a new interpretation of the DIKW hierarchy. The static DIKW pyramid no longer suits the dynamic nature of the DIKW hierarchy... The paper introduces a new dynamic model of the DIKW hierarchy called DIKW tree (or Tree of Knowledge).

Why is it important?

The paper offers a new concept of information which is presented in a metaphorical form through the new dynamic DIKW model called "tree of Knowledge". The corpus of human (and not only human) knowledge is represented by a "tree of knowledge" that grows from two sources: one stems from the "data ground" and is represented by the "information sap" (the flow of information) and the other, the "meaning sap", was created as a consequence of "mind sun rays" over the "tree of knowledge" (in a type of "photosynthesis" of the "tree of knowledge"). In general, “mind sun rays” symbolise man's faculty for abstract thought, which is necessary for the organization of knowledge, but also for data coding. All knowledge ("the tree of knowledge" in general) is created through the symbiosis of these two flows. Although symbolic in character, this image makes information visible, which is not the case with the ordinary experience, making the role of information in the knowledge acquisition process more understandable. Information is recognized as a mental construction because it appears within the "tree of knowledge" as an invisible “communication tool” between "world of data" and "world of knowledge" within a cognitive system.
