What is it about?

The paper reports on the results of a systematic review examining the effectiveness of correctional programmes for women offenders. The results indicate that programmes overall are effective and that programmes that address women's substance abuse represented the majority of the effective programmes identified. There is some evidence that programmes that are gender responsive may be particularly effective.

Why is it important?

While there is a large body of evidence pointing to the effectiveness of correctional programmes for male offenders, the results for women are less well studied. This study represents an up to date review of recent research that evaluated the impact of correctional interventions on reducing recidivism.

Perspectives

Given that women represent a small percentage of offender populations, compared to the literature on men, there are few studies examining what works in interventions to reduce women's criminal recidivism. This work contributes to the evidence base in the area of women's corrections.
