What is it about?

Many schools now use online courses to teach basic digital skills, but these courses can take a lot of time and do not always adapt to what each student already knows. We compare a “one-size-fits-all” online course with an adaptive version that lets students skip topics they already master. In a very large group of high school students, we find that the adaptive version lets most students finish the courses in much less time without lowering their exam results, but we also identify a smaller group of struggling students who do not fully benefit and may need extra support.
