What is it about?
Pesantren is an Indonesian Islamic institution specialises at religious education. In many cases, Pesantrens can be found in rural areas and are found to participate in local development. We discuss the idea of Local Economic Development and Maqāṣid al-Sharī‘ah and discuss the role of a pesantren in promoting these two theories.

Why is it important?
We detail in what way a pesantren has been practising the theory of local economic development and Maqāṣid al-Sharī‘ah. A practical implication calls the local government to legally engage with the existing pesantren to perform the programme of poverty alleviation, given Indonesia's poverty highly occurs in the countryside.
Perspectives
I hope to make a significant contribution to the discourse of economic development. This paper attempts to harmonise Western and Eastern perspectives on human development.
