What is it about?

Organizations survive only when they innovate continuously. It is the people and not the organizations that create new things. There are various leadership styles that managers follow to motivate their subordinates to display innovative work behavior. This research study shows that transformational leadership approach has the strongest influence on followers' IWBs.

Why is it important?

An important concern for leaders relates to their leadership style that can increase their followers' productivity, especially voluntary behaviors such as innovative work behavior, organizational citizenship behavior, pro-environmental behavior etc. One of the most effective style is transformational leadership style. This study confirms that when managers give personal consideration to their followers, stimulate them intellectually, set themselves as role models, provide vision and direction, they tend to more strongly motivate their subordinates to display higher levels of IWBs.

Perspectives

There is no one leadership approach which fits in every situation. But my opinion is that when it comes to voluntary and discretionary behaviors of the followers, such as pro-environmental behavior, innovative work behavior, organizational citizenship behavior, etc. the best approach resides in transformational leadership. Other leadership approaches such as environmental leadership, responsible leadership, spiritual leadership, entrepreneurial leadership, all borrow some main aspects of transformational leadership.
