What is it about?

Plasma nitriding and plasma nitrocarburizing are compared in surface properties with the aim of improving the tribological behaviour of carbon steel, used for camshats.

Why is it important?

Nitrocarburizing is the usual treatment because it is traditional for these steels and it has a deep penetration, but we demonstrate that with a thinner nitride layer, best tribological results can be obtained.

Perspectives

Sometimes in the industrial world something is carried out in a certain way only because "it was always done in this way". We scientists have the responsibility to show other options if they are here and to offer practical evidence. In this case the nitriding tretament is certainly more convenient than the usual nitrocarburizing, not only for the tribological results but also from the treatment point of view, shorter, cleaner.
