What is it about?

The main reasons why people work is 1) to earn an income, 2) to have a regular routine, 3) for self-satisfaction 4) for the personal relationships they form with others 5) for the social status the work gives them 6) because society values people who work as compared to those who don't work 7) because some work is associated with being a man or a woman, and 8) to get skills training.

Why is it important?

Across the world economies are growing while the number of jobs are hardly growing. This means that 1) more people are without work, and 2) without the added reasons for working such as a routine, satisfaction, relationships and status. Employment guarantee programmes mitigate these effects by providing the unemployed the ability to work, even though they earn less in such programmes.
