Restoring balance: Earth overshoot day as a framework for teacher education

What is it about?

This study explores how future teachers develop awareness and understanding of Earth Overshoot Day (EOD), which marks the point when humanity's resource consumption exceeds Earth's capacity to regenerate them in a year. Through a four-week educational program, participants engaged in activities such as calculating ecological footprints, discussing sustainability, and creating awareness campaigns. The findings reveal that participants gained significant knowledge about EOD, identified its causes (like overconsumption and ecosystem damage), and proposed actions to address it, such as promoting sustainable living and integrating EOD education into their teaching practices. This study highlights the importance of equipping future educators with the tools and confidence to raise environmental awareness and promote sustainability in their classrooms.
