What is it about?

Interest in studying the emissions associated with air travel in higher education institutions (HEIs) has grown in recent years from different approaches that consider the associated impacts, organisational and individual responsibilities for flying, and the emergence of specific policies on the subject. This article systematically reviews the available literature on decarbonising air travel in HEIs to identify and analyse the main strategies employed in categorising and managing air travel displacements. This study advances the understanding and definition of the limits related to HEIs air travel emissions, identifying leading indicators, metrics, main emission categories and the levels of institutional, indirect, and individual analysis, providing valuable insights into defining policies for decarbonising air travel in HEIs, along with the main institutional and individual factors associated with each level as reported in the literature.
