The influence of sustainability indicators on university performance: an analysis of global university rankings

What is it about?

This study investigates whether sustainability practices help universities perform better in global rankings. We analyzed over 400 universities using data from three major rankings: UI GreenMetric, THE World University Rankings, and QS. Using a method that identifies different combinations of actions leading to high performance, we found that practices like waste management, water use, and education for sustainability are linked to better results, especially in rankings that measure more than just academic performance. Our results can help university leaders design strategies that are both sustainable and effective for improving their global standing.
