What is it about?
This paper reports the reasons why people leave a research training program. We looked at a small workplace based training program in rural Australia which had been running for 6 years and examined why people withdrew from the program before completion.

Why is it important?
Most programs focus on their publications, presentations and completions to measure success. However to decrease the likelihood of attrition from programs of this type, you need to understand why they leave. This study is the first of its type to explore these reasons.
Perspectives
This paper challenged many of my assumptions around why people leave a research training course. I had thought certain professions may be more at risk, but this was not supported. Instead it is the organisational factors that seem more important.
