What is it about?
Planning of maintenance activities is important when there are many machines & equipment. A comprehensive approach is needed so that machines downtimes are not high and organization objectives are accomplished. In this article, we suggest some steps to do this. Particularly, we express the view that, technical characteristics of the machines & equipment are to be well-accounted for in planning the maintenance activities.

Why is it important?
We have suggested some steps to enhance the effectiveness of maintenance activities. The steps synthesize some other approaches, discussed by other experts and add to these. We have emphasized the integration of reliability engineering factors, i.e., the technical characteristics of the machine & equipment, processes, materials used, with maintenance planning. The approach as suggested by us is based on practical observations and broad-based logics. The adoption of such an approach will help organizations to increase maintenance effectiveness.
Perspectives
The article gives an approach that is based on many practical observations and is well-reasoned. It should help organizations much to plan the maintenance activities in a methodical way.
