What is it about?
A new conceptual model to improve strategy execution is presented. The ‘MERIL-DE Model’ integrates nine vital strategy execution components, namely: 1) Leadership, 2) Strategic Planning, 3) Project Management, 4) Alignment, 5) Performance Management (MERIL cycle of Measure, Evaluate, Report, Improve, and Learn ), 6) Drive, 7) Engagement, 8) Risk Management, and 9) Stakeholder Management. To apply this model, each organisation has to build its own unique, tailor-made ‘Stratex Car’.

Why is it important?
Strategy execution is generally regarded as the No 1 challenge facing managers today. This new MERIL-DE conceptual model, with its supportive Car analogy, will help managers to better prepare for their strategy execution journey and improve their chances of creating the intended benefits or value as stated in their strategic plans. Real value is created through successful strategy execution.
Perspectives
It was a pleasure working with Prof. Erwin Schwella on my PhD research and on this article. It is my wish that this article will stimulate new thinking and further research in the discipline of strategy execution - particularly in the challenging public sector context. I trust this will specifically lead to public sector organisations worldwide being better equipped to execute their strategies successfully for the benefit of the public and their other stakeholders.
