This study used a survey to identify characteristics of refugees that helped or hindered them from successfully acquiring a family doctor after they had been provided services through a specialized refugee clinic.

Why is it important?

Providing primary care to refugees for the first several years after their arrival to Canada can be complex. Specialized refugee clinics fill this need but have limited funding. Thus, transitioning refugees from the specialized refugee clinic to the regular health system is important yet how to do this well has not been well-documented. This study looked at factors that promoted successful acquisition of a family doctor by refugees after they had been served by a specialized refugee clinic.
