Why is it important?
Rural science teachers are often professionally isolated, being the only science teacher in the school or district. This isolation precludes participation in collaborative professional communities, which is shown to benefit student learning. In this study, we used technology to connect isolated rural science teachers and support deep collaboration via the creation of shared lesson plans.
Perspectives
We have allowed the traditional structures of schools and districts to limit opportunities for rural science teachers to connect with like-minded colleagues. Technology advances in recent years now allow us to overcome those traditional organizational barriers and support deep collaboration at a distance.
