What is it about?

The study of entrepreneurship is gender biased. It privileges the entrepreneurial behaviour of certain identities such as White middle-class men, and disadvantages others such as women and marginalized men. While recent studies have addressed how women perform entrepreneurship, little is known about how marginalized men perform entrepreneurship. Drawing on qualitative data from Black African immigrant male entrepreneurs who practised entrepreneurship in a predominantly white context, this study found that the men used their relationships with White women to portray a respectable entrepreneurial masculinity. This concept of ‘using’ the identity of White women in exchange for business gain is termed transactional masculinity. It provides a ‘rite of passage’ for these entrepreneurs and grants them a level of social acceptance.
