What is it about?

Mountain running is perhaps not the first event on people's mind as a sport worth investigation. This paper documents the success factors of the Climbathon, a small scale sport tourism event that takes place at Kinabalu Park (UNESCO World Heritage Site), Sabah, Malaysia.

Why is it important?

Destination management organisations (DMOs) play an important role in creating and promoting events. Often, there is not enough attention given to documenting the successful outcomes of their policies. This paper evaluates the first 25 years of a sport tourism event that pinpoints the combined efforts of both sports and tourism policy. The inclusion of oral history within the research design indicates the utility of this method when little published information is available on events.

Perspectives

Sport tourism literature often focuses on mega-events such as the Olympics and FIFA World Cup due to the huge investments and potential returns. This paper documents a small scale annual event in order to understand the factors that have ensured its continuity.
