What is it about?

International elements have been shaping the development of higher education in Malaysia for the past six decades. The manifestation of internationalisation, however, has changed significantly at both system and institution levels. At the system level, Malaysia has transformed from a sending to receiving country, from being an aid recipient to an equal partner, and from a host to a provider. At the institutional level, internationalisation transforms from a fad to a norm, and from having unilateral collaboration to setting up multinational collaborations with international partners. This article examines internationalisation of Malaysian higher education from the past to the present, and discusses future directions for the system, particularly its role in addressing the global agenda on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
