What is it about?

In Phu Thuan, Vietnam, climate change threatens fishers’ livelihoods with warmer weather and unpredictable rain. Our study surveyed 119 households, interviewed fishers, and reviewed weather data (1956–2022). We found that 23.5% face severe fishing gear damage, 21% see fewer fish, and many struggle with health and income losses. Fishers adapt by reinvesting in fishing (58%) or taking other jobs like seasonal work (47%), but some use harmful nets, hurting the ocean. Younger fishers with more workers adapt better. Like fishers in Bangladesh and Ghana, they need local solutions. We suggest training for new jobs, fair fishing rules, and stronger gear to protect incomes and the sea, supporting global goals for poverty reduction, climate action, and ocean health.
