What is it about?

A redefined green roof system with climbers apart from becoming a successful strategy for UHI adaptation is also able to record savings on water and also an estimated 568% savings on topsoil consumption with an impact on the reduction of pollution from excavation.

Why is it important?

Conventional green roofs are difficult to adopt as a strategy for greening existing buildings due to the cost involved in structural load considerations and water proofing. Climbing plants however are able to adapt to the existing roofs for a better thermal-radiative performance than conventional green roofs.

Perspectives

Researchers have sought for many ways to increase the influence of green infrastructure in the regulation of heat islands and I believe redefining green roofs with climbers will not only make it easier for the mass adoption of green roof but open up more ideas for bio-hybrid approach to greening.
