What is it about?

This research study aims to investigate the learning journeys of necessity and opportunity motivated women entrepreneurs in small businesses, in Karnataka, India. The paper uniquely adds to the body of research on women entrepreneurship from the perspective of an emerging nation, especially in the area of entrepreneurial learning where studies have been scarce. The study found that everyday learning is crucial for both NEC (necessity) and OPP (opportunity) women entrepreneurs, helping them stay competitive. The study highlights that the ways both groups learn are quite similar, despite different motivations for starting their businesses. This research adds to our understanding of women entrepreneurs' learning processes and suggests that both groups are equally motivated to learn and grow. For policymakers, the findings are encouraging, showing that both NEC and OPP entrepreneurs benefit from various learning mechanisms. Combining formal education with practical experiences can lead to comprehensive learning, accommodating different needs and preferences of women entrepreneurs.
