What is it about?

To understand why Ethiopian garment-sector technical and vocational education and training (TVET) graduates often do not find jobs in the industry, we examine gaps between TVET teachers and students in their perceptions of employable skills. Teachers’ perceptions are influenced by conventional teaching methods and lack of exposure to new competency-based training approaches. Students’ perceptions depend on their job aspirations and motivation to attend TVET. Perceptions are also influenced by respondents’ opinions of enterprise-based cooperative training. We find that perceptions of employable skills differ based on not only different views of labor market conditions but also different opinions of TVET efficacy.
