What is it about?

The goal of this research has been to analyse the relationship between the resilience of preschool teachers and their readiness to develop children’s resilience. More specifically, this study included: (1) an investigation of the structure and the level of preschool teachers’ resilience; (2) an investigation of the structure and the level of preschool teachers’ readiness for developing children’s resilience and (3) an analysis of components of preschool teachers’ readiness for developing children’s resilience based on their own resilience and their perceived level of support from their institutions regarding implementation of programmes for developing children’s resilience.

Why is it important?

Based on the results of this study, we conclude that resilience of Croatian preschool teachers who participated in this study is well developed. They have a high level of resilience (with the average results ranging from 5.46 to 6.31), measured by Resilience Scale for Adults (Friborg et al., 2005). According to the results of our research, the weakest component of preschool readiness for developing children’s resilience is the lack of knowledge about values and implementation of such programmes, as well as the perception of the importance of such programmes in particular kindergartens.

Perspectives

The importance of this research stems from the fact that this is the first Croatian research on resilience in the context of early childhood education. Additionally, this research contributes to small number of studies that link preschool teachers’ resilience with their readiness to foster resilience in children.
