Why is it important?

As educators and practitioners working with young people, we should remember that our perspectives might greatly differ from those of young people. Understanding food-related social determinants and justifications for food practices from pupils’ perspective are valuable pedagogical assets for teachers. Young people's criticism could be seen also as possibilities for dialogue, rather than merely behavior to be shut down or scolded upon by adults.

Perspectives

The article is a part of a qualitative case study comprising of extensive data form one secondary school. Through the use of multiple methods, including participatory observations at the field school, I gained broad and context bound knowledge of what was important for the young people of the study. The research is situated in the Finnish context, which is internationally renown from its school lunch and education system.
