What is it about?

This paper examines some of the best known existing theories around how some companies can gain an advantage over its competitors in the marketplace. The paper is the first of a trio that seek to challenge whether existing theories take account of the changes in markets following the New Public Management movement.

Why is it important?

When this paper was written, the marketisation (opening of public services to private providers, so that a new market is created) was relatively new. This seemed to present a challenge to existing ideas about how markets are organised.
