What is it about?

What are the factors affecting whether housing aids the well-being of adults receiving support for mental health problems? This study uses the systematic review approach developed in health care to find the evidence. This consists of service-users’ accounts of housing experiences, and the sort of support they want in finding and sustaining it. Three main themes are identified from the evidence - the ‘Tripod Model’ illustrates how all the factors fit together.

Why is it important?

The study gives professionals an overview of the evidence about what makes housing work for users of mental health services. It details what service-users see as important about housing, and the sort of support they value in finding and sustaining it. The Tripod Model encourages a balanced approach to identifying and providing housing. Achieving this balance can maximise service-users’ independence and self-regard, and reduce readmissions to hospital.
