Why is it important?

The unique position of the United Nations as a platform for addressing global challenges in areas such as humanitarian aid, peacekeeping, security, and sustainable development is well recognized. However, when it comes to technological innovation, the UN is not typically seen as a key player. In recent years, there has been significant discussion surrounding blockchain technology – an innovative development that first emerged in the late 2000s. Interestingly enough, private sector organizations have largely taken center stage in these discussions. On the other hand very little literature exists that focuses specifically on blockchain initiatives supported by UN entities. This study aims to fill this gap by providing an overview of different blockchain projects backed by UN institutions and also identifying potential areas for further research.

Perspectives

In this study, an exploratory case study method was employed to explore and analyze the various ways in which UN entities have been utilizing blockchain technology. The main objective of this research was to gain a comprehensive understanding of how these entities are using blockchain innovations as part of their efforts to achieve sustainable and equitable development worldwide. By taking a broad perspective, this paper aims to shed light on the diverse applications of blockchain within the UN system and highlight its potential impact on global development initiatives.
