What is it about?
The present paper introduces, describes, illustrates, and discusses “Bouncecasting”—an approach for conducting seminar games for foresight that systematically accommodates the uncertainties of the future as well as the differing values that stakeholders might place on possible futures. Bouncecasting is particularly useful when qualitative foresight research involving diverse stakeholders is needed to identify promising approaches to what have been termed “wicked problems.” Wicked here refers to resistance to a solution rather than evil—that is, seemingly intractable societal problems characterized as highly complex and difficult to recognize. Proposed solutions to such problems can appear to be incomplete, not agreed upon by a consensus of stakeholders, or even contradictory. Bouncecasting, by combining several tools of foresight in a systematic way, offers promising possibilities that might not be otherwise be envisaged for addressing wicked problems.
