What is it about?

Traditionally, workplace occupant surveys are carried out just once, and ask employees to report their general perceptions over a long period of time. This increases the risk that responses might be affected by certain types of bias. In this pilot study, we demonstrate how the "experience sampling method" (i.e. repeatedly asking the same people how they feel "right-here-right-now") might be suitable as a complementary approach.

Why is it important?

By overcoming the limitations of previous methodologies, we increase our ability to understand the effects of the workplace environment on employees.

Perspectives

I hope this article encourages workplace practitioners to consider how the experience sampling methodology might be used to implement continuous feedback loops in facilities management practice (i.e. employees can use their smartphones to rate the workplace environment at any time, and facilities staff can make alterations accordingly).
