What is it about?

Since independence from the Soviet Union 25 years ago, Ukraine has had the opportunity to recreate its vocational education system. This analysis was based on interviews and observations at 15 vocational schools and 7 universities throughout the country. The results illustrate that the current system includes both new and old elements, as well as strengths and challenges.

Why is it important?

The analysis of vocational education and training in Ukraine reveals that the country is in a unique situation: they are at the crossroads in time (between generations before and after the Soviet era) and in place (between Russia and Europe). The intersection of these dimensions is sometimes complementary and sometimes conflicted, but certainly influence the development of Ukraine's VET system.

Perspectives

This research project provided much knowledge and numerous insights about VET in Ukraine. As an outside observer, I used the lens of vocational education to also learn a lot about their education system in general and their society at large, which made for interesting comparisons with the United States. The hosts and participants were very generous and supportive.
