What is it about?

We used data from two UK based organisations based in the North of England. Both were manufacturing plants with mature forms of employee representation established as each site. One site solely used a non-union company Works Council established after the derecognition of its site base trade union; the other company had a trade union representing its members on site, with no non-union representation on site. We employ the concept of employee representative dilemmas to assess the outcomes of a series of critical events, thereby leading is to a perspective and viewpoint about whether a 'contest' for employee representation is played out in these organisations, and what such a 'contest' says about the prospects for successful employee representation in both union and non-union settings.
