What is it about?

The paper examines a wide range of standards and guidelines, their usefulness, and the areas they cover. It illustrates how various terms like Electronic Records Management Systems, Electronic Document Management Systems, Electronic Document and Records Management Systems, and Enterprise Content Management have been used without much clarity on their interrelationships. To address this issue, the paper proposes a framework for clarification that aims to provide a better understanding of these concepts.

Why is it important?

The analysis shows that the development of standards and good practice guidelines has been a longstanding tradition dating back to the 1980s. Furthermore, two main categories of these standards and guidelines can be identified: those with assessment mechanisms in place and those without such mechanisms. The decision to include an assessment mechanism depends on the intended purpose behind the creation of a particular standard or guideline.

Perspectives

The objective of this paper is to expand and deepen the discourse on standards and guidelines for best practices beyond local or regional initiatives, encompassing global advancements as well.
