What is it about?
Mahajan Ortho and Surgical Hospitals pioneered the use of robotic-assisted surgeries in India. It is a small hospital located in Nagpur, an upcoming metropolis in Central India. Dr. Mahajan was academically proficient and thus entered the field of medical education and trained in the UK for 8 years in orthopedics. He returned from the UK after the 9/11 attacks to serve Indian citizens and started a small orthopedic hospital in Nagpur. His use of robotic-assisted surgery became a successful case among patients and doctors. However, come 2024, the integration of artificial intelligence with robotic-assisted surgery posed challenges to skilled doctors by allowing even the less-skilled ones to perform the procedures on the patient. How can Dr. Mahajan address these challenges? The case describes the journey of Dr. Mahajan and his hospital with robotic-assisted surgery and leads students to discuss how he can address these challenges.
