What is it about?

Electronic lab notebooks (ELNs) also known as electronic research notebooks (ERNs) allow researchers to better manage the processes involved in the development, description, representation, and sharing of research data. This article describes a developing institutional ELN project.

Why is it important?

Electronic lab notebook also known as electronic research notebook (ERN) enable systematic data planning, collection, storage, deposit, publication, preservation and curation, discovery, and access of research data. An ERN can scope beyond traditional wet lab, provide good documentation, help guides, enable integration with institutional infrastructure and research support services, allow data exports in multiple formats, and facilitate transparency in the conduct or reporting of research in compliance with regulatory frameworks.

Perspectives

Researchers from multiple scientific disciplines have inquired about institutional support of an electronic lab notebook (ELN)/laboratory information management system (LIMS). Many researchers use free or personal versions without risk assessments. Formal risk assessments of electronic notebooks for open and research data are necessary for research computing environments, institutional compliances, and regulatory frameworks.
